City Manager Falsely Attacks Lido Island Resident

A ROGUE STAFF OR CALCULATED CAMPAIGN OF DECEPTION AT CITY HALL?

Last week every resident and business in Newport Beach began receiving the City Manager’s July 2013 Newsletter. (view the newsletter here – pay special attention to page 4)

The propaganda is a taxpayer funded (you) mailer they use to sway public opinion.  It’s thinly masked as public information of selective information designed to make them look good, and spin information to the benefit of the bureaucrats.

For example, in the newsletter Kiff talks about city employees now paying “up to $5 million” of their retirement contribution.  Sounds pretty good.   Kiff doesn’t tell you that taxpayers (you) have been paying BOTH the employer  and city employee’s retirement share for decades.  Translation – taxpayers pay both sides of the retirement costs for our public employees.  And we have more employees per capita than any city in Orange County.  Does your employer pay both the employer and employee share of Social Security?

Here’s the slippery part.  Kiff bloviates about the $5 million employees will contribute this year – but he’s not so chatty about the $30 million or so you are paying this year for city employees share of retirement.**  And he uses our money to send this out to residents and businesses!

** (A quick disclaimer – the city does itemize the taxpayers contribution in the budget.  After reviewing labor MOU’s and the budget I am estimating taxpayers pay around $30 million of the employees share.  A little transparency would be grand on this issue.)

USING TAXPAYERS (YOUR) $$ TO FALSELY ACCUSE A RESIDENT

In another attempt to demonize residential dock owners, City Manager Kiff’s newsletter highlights a home on Lido Island with a large dock complex (see p. 4 of newsletter).  Kiff relishes in his theory of how much money this resident makes renting the dock – by his analysis the resident generates $114,000 annually by renting the dock to 19 boats.

30,000 homeowners, renters, and businesses were recipients of Kiff’s purely speculative attack.  Kiff accuses the homeowner of a crime without an justification – all paid for with your tax dollars.

The Lido Island family called out by Kiff collects antique boats. They have every right to do so.  The homeowner is quiet and private.  They don’t rent their dock, pay their taxes, and enjoy our community.  They don’t deserve to be harassed by our city government trying to justify the dock tax.

In most cities the paid staff is an advocate for residents.  Not in Newport Beach.  It’s a sad state of affairs when our politicians let an unelected and  unaccountable employee use tax dollars to attack law abiding tax paying residents.  Do our  elected councilmembers condone staff using our tax dollars to falsely attack the folks that pay their salaries?

It’s time for a change.

TELL THEM WHAT YOU THINK

Tell all seven city councilmembers what you think of city spending.  My research shows that the city’s budget has doubled in the last ten years.  Click here to register your opinion about the largest city government per capita in Orange County.  Your opinion will be sent to each city councilmember.

Sincerely,
